RESUMEN

Ovarian endometriosis is characterized by the growth of endometrial tissue within the ovary, causing infertility and chronic pain. However, its pathophysiology remains unclear. Utilizing high-precision single-cell RNA sequencing, we profile the normal, eutopic, and ectopic endometrium from 34 individuals across proliferative and secretory phases. We observe an increased proportion of ciliated cells in both eutopic and ectopic endometrium, characterized by a diminished expression of estrogen sulfotransferase, which likely confers apoptosis resistance. After translocating to ectopic lesions, endometrial epithelium upregulates nicotinamide N-methyltransferase expression that inhibits apoptosis by promoting deacetylation and subsequent nuclear exclusion of transcription factor forkhead box protein O1, thereby leading to the downregulation of the apoptotic gene BIM. Moreover, epithelial cells in ectopic lesions elevate HLA class II complex expression, which stimulates CD4+ T cells and consequently contributes to chronic inflammation. Altogether, our study provides a comprehensive atlas of ovarian endometriosis and highlights potential therapeutic targets for modulating apoptosis and inflammation.

RESUMEN

2D monolayers supporting a wide variety of highly confined plasmons, phonon polaritons, and exciton polaritons can be vertically stacked in van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) with controlled constituent layers, stacking sequence, and even twist angles. vdWHs combine advantages of 2D material polaritons, rich optical structure design, and atomic scale integration, which have greatly extended the performance and functions of polaritons, such as wide frequency range, long lifetime, ultrafast all-optical modulation, and photonic crystals for nanoscale light. Here, the state of the art of 2D material polaritons in vdWHs from the perspective of design principles and potential applications is reviewed. Some fundamental properties of polaritons in vdWHs are initially discussed, followed by recent discoveries of plasmons, phonon polaritons, exciton polaritons, and their hybrid modes in vdWHs. The review concludes with a perspective discussion on potential applications of these polaritons such as nanophotonic integrated circuits, which will benefit from the intersection between nanophotonics and materials science.

RESUMEN

Dual inhibition of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and vascular endothelial growth factor pathways for the treatment for EGFR-mutated, metastatic non-small cell lung cancer is supported by previous randomized controlled trials. However, the use of second-generation irreversible EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) dacomitinib in combination with antiangiogenic therapy has not been reported in the literature. Here, we report the case of a 73-year-old man who presented with hemoptysis and dyspnea on exertion and was diagnosed with right upper lung adenocarcinoma with pleural metastasis and L858R mutation. The second case is of a 60-year-old woman who presented with low back pain and was diagnosed with right lower lung adenocarcinoma with bone metastasis and L858R mutation. Both patients underwent first-line therapy with the TKI dacomitinib in combination with bevacizumab. The first patient showed a nearly complete response, and the second patient showed a partial response after the combination therapy and no severe side effects.

RESUMEN

We report the case of a 24-year-old man who presented with chief complaints of shortness of breath and haemoptysis; chest radiography revealed complete collapse of the left lung. Bronchoscopy revealed an endobronchial tumour with complete obstruction of the left main bronchus. Cryosurgical excision was performed; tissue pathology confirmed the diagnosis of metastatic embryonal carcinoma. The patient underwent a right orchiectomy followed by a bleomycin + etoposide + cisplatin (BEP) chemotherapy regimen.

RESUMEN

With the increasing dependency of human life on wearable electronics, the development of corresponding energy-storage devices is being insensitively pursued. Considering the special usage locations of wearable energy-storage devices, the safety and non-toxicity of electrode materials adopted should be of concern. In this work, a novel all-solid-state wearable supercapacitor based on the renewable-biomolecule emodin, naturally derivable from traditional Chinese herbal rhubarb or Polygonum cuspidatum, was successfully fabricated. Such supercapacitors exhibited excellent charge storage and rate capability with great flexibility and could be integrated into wearable electronics. As a proof of concept, a strap-shaped supercapacitor was fabricated, and it was capable of powering an electronic watch. Our work will promote the development of safe wearable electronics.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Scapular orientation and movements can affect the function of the shoulder. However, evidence is limited on whether symptomatic subjects can actively maintain the scapula in a neutral position through conscious control. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether symptomatic subjects with scapular dyskinesis can achieve optimal scapular movements and associated muscle activities through conscious control. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: Sixty subjects with scapular dyskinesis (16 inferior angle pattern I, 16 medial border pattern II, and 28 mixed pattern) performed 3 selected exercises (arm elevation, side-lying elevation, and side-lying external rotation) with and without conscious control. Three-dimensional electromagnetic motion and electromyography were used to record the scapular kinematics and muscle activation during the exercises. RESULTS: For scapular kinematics, significant increases in scapular external rotation (4.6 ± 3.2°, p < 0.0125) were found with conscious control during arm elevation and side-lying elevation in three groups. Significant increases in activation of the middle and lower trapezius (MT: 4.9 ± 2.4% MVIC; LT: 10.2 ± 6.8% MVIC, p < 0.0 25) were found with conscious control in 3 exercises among the 3 dyskinesis groups. Increased serratus anterior activation (SA: 11.2 ± 4.8% MVIC, p < 0.0 25) was found in the concentric phase of side-lying external rotation in the pattern I and I + II groups. CONCLUSION: Conscious control of the scapula can alter scapular orientation and MT, LT, and SA activation during 3 selected exercises in subjects with symptomatic dyskinesis. Specifically, conscious control during side-lying external rotation can be applied to increase SA activity in pattern I and I + II dyskinesis.
